Document Design
You should be building up a document which explains the different aspects of design listed below. You will need to access this in order to complete your leaflet evaluation next week.
- Images: Quality, size, file type, effects
- Colour: Colour scheme, CYMK or RGB, colour harmony, tone, colour associations, highlight
- Proximity: Layout, organisation, clutter, what should be grouped together
- Typography: Heading font, body font, font size, spacing, legibility, alignment, styles
- Contrast: Size, colour, weighting, contrast between items, stand out
- Balance: Asymmetrical or symmetrical, predictable, dynamic, hierarchy

Student assessment activity instructions
Research
Before you begin working on your own designs for your leaflet you should find examples of leaflets that all ready exist. Stick these into your visual diary and annotate them to highlight the good or bad design elements.
Planning
Before you begin to create your leaflet you are required to do some planning. In your visual diary, blog or similar:
Once you have finished your planning begin creating your leaflet. The final leaflet must be saved, along wit all linked graphics, into a separate and appropriately named folder. All files must be saved with appropriate names and correct file extensions, e.g. .tiff for graphics.
Evaluating and printing
When you have finished, print proof read and evaluate an initial draft copy. In proofing and evaluating your draft ensure that:

- Identify the purpose of your leaflet, i.e. where and how it is to be used and who the target audience is.
- Identify all the requirements of the brief as specified by the stakeholder.
- Draw some thumbnail sketches illustrating how you will layout the pages of the leaflet. The sketches should show relative positions and sizes of both the text and graphics, identify the fonts, font sizes, text formatting and show the enhancements that will be used.
Once you have finished your planning begin creating your leaflet. The final leaflet must be saved, along wit all linked graphics, into a separate and appropriately named folder. All files must be saved with appropriate names and correct file extensions, e.g. .tiff for graphics.
Evaluating and printing
When you have finished, print proof read and evaluate an initial draft copy. In proofing and evaluating your draft ensure that:
- All specifications have been met
- All the supplied text and at least two of the graphics have been used.
- All spelling and grammar is correct (use a spell checker and get someone else to proof read it)
- All text is legible and reader friendly
- You have used at least two different enhancements (e.g. texture, borders, emboss)
- The leaflet displays balance, proportion, harmony and sequence

Over the holidays...
Brief
check that your brief is complete with the specification of the A4 3 fold leaflet.
Gantt chart
This should be updated and saved as a different version as you work though it. (Level 3: remember you need to add milestones - with any missed deadlines explained)
Level 3: Client
You may need to meet with your client again, they should approve all concept sketches before you start to create the final designs.
Make sure that your visual diary is up to date
At least three thumbnail sketches for each of your leaflet design. Concept sketch for final idea - this should be annotated both to describe the document and to say what tools and techniques you plan to use to create it.
Research and content
You should be gathering and creating the content for your documents, remember that if the content is not your original work you will need to gain permission to use the text / image from the author.

Introduction
There are a number of musical festivals happening in summer 2009. The promoters have approached local design schools to create a logo for the events. Your logo must include lines, curves, shading, 3-dimensional perspectives and text. You must then place your logo on a t-shirt or bag to show your what your design would look like.
Pick which of the following you would like to work with:
• Dance: Electric Boogaloo
• Hip Hop: Bling Beats
• Rock / pop: Download
• Jazz / Folk: Under the Willow
• Emo / Goth: The End
• Regae / Roots: Red Dub
Tasks

Research into logo design, what are logos used for? Good design? Different types of design?
A variety thumbnail sketches and ideas for your logo design, you must say which one you are choosing to develop and explain why.
Blog - Outline
Create a step-by-step outline to describe the steps you will follow to produce your design.
Justify the tools you have selected to produce your design.
Describe the shape of the illustration, and identify the techniques to be used to create it.
Blog - Research into computer design
Describe the advantages and disadvantages of computer design illustration.
Compare computer design to other forms of design illustration production.
Blog - Brief
Describe the purpose and communication objectives of your logo. What must your logo include? Who is the audience? How will it be used?
Create your logo
Using illustrator follow the steps you have outlined in your blog to create your logo as a vector image.
Create your t-shirt or bag
Using Photoshop create your item follow the steps you have outlined in your blog to create the texture and place your logo.
Evaluation
Evaluate your logo against the outline and logo against the brief.
Assessment

Example of good work
Your visual diary should include; brainstorms, thumbnail sketches, concept design, research into effects, tools and techniques and design. Your sketches should be annotated to describe different elements of your design for example font, colour, layout as well as justifying (saying why) you have made these decisions.
